In the Bloomfield article, a virtual world for studying physical world business is discussed. This reminds me of taking online classes as opposed to physical classes, which is the closest thing I can get to understanding the virtual business world. As virtual students we must complete our work and report to a teacher much like a virtual worker would have to report to their boss. Goals in this context consist of regular business goals but with expanded yet also limited aspects. Much like an online course, workers are more careful in using wording, making deadlines, and communicating about technical malfunctions. Of course limitations are also included here if even carefully worded memos are misinterpreted, there is a technical error in submitting work, or communication channels are blocked.

According the Portwood-stacer articles, the reasons for media refusal were addiction, asceticism, or aesthetics. These reasons and justifications for media refusal are each different and complex. Nonuser’s rationalizations have sparked interest and show us how we can use technology to talk about technology (or lack thereof). I myself refused to use Twitter because I deemed it unprofessional and not necessary especially because I already used Facebook, which was working well for me. I recently got a Twitter account for a class and have been regretting it ever since. I hate having to edit because of character restrictions and getting used to a new platform is a waste of time, social media should be making things easier, not harder. This type of refusal seems like a better type of justification to me; it makes sense to not use something that is difficult or restricting. It’s like wearing an extra tight pair of jeans… it might make you look good but it restricts your mobility.

Offline meetings can help or hurt online context depending on the situation at hand. We participate in the virtual world of business in a game-like platform, which I think adds a game-like quality to the communication that takes place. I do not believe that this means that online business is a game, it just allows for people to do things that they wouldn’t or couldn’t do in real life. For example, in our physical classroom we can work out kinks of Second Life, but in the Second Life classroom, we can do things like fly or jump, where if we did something like that in the physical classroom we might get some weird looks. We still manage to get our work done and learn a lot in both physical and virtual worlds but they are fundamentally different and will have different rules about how to communicate.
