Online communities can be beneficial or detrimental to the online and offline community. Truthfully, it really depends on what the online community is about, as well as the level of sensitivity of the individual. The McCabe reading gave some insight regarding a specific group that is ostracized from society and how this can be seen as a way to help individuals fight against a disease known within society. Even if a certain group is not ostracized from society, there are still online groups that people can use when they need help with something. For example, I would go on online communities for people who have Apple products to get more information about a problem I am having with. Also, I think that YouTube is really great because people can really help others. It’s extremely helpful for anyone who needs tutorials or tips. In addition, people leave comments and suggestion videos, which is always great to look at. I use YouTube to get the information I need to learn about whatever it is I need.
We can build relationships or connections with anyone online or offline. The use of digital technology and electronic communication makes it easier and flexible for people to get in touch with one another. There was a time when I went to Texas for a few months, and I thought it would be impossible to get in contact with one of my good friends. However, through the use of digital communication (texting, phone calls, Skype, Facebook) I was able to get in contact whenever we could. Now, building friendships for the first time through the online community is just as possible as building one offline. Building offline relationships is probably harder than building one online. Online communities allow those who have things in common to communicate with each other, so it should be easy for others to kind of jump into this friendship almost immediately because they have similar interests. Building relationships online is just as equal as building relationships offline. Sometimes, I think it may be better to meet online so people can freely express themselves and their interests so others can see and interact with one another. I think it’s extremely important that when people try to build any sort of relationship, either online or offline, people should communicate honestly and effectively in order to really/truly get to know each other.
